October 2026 Astrology: What Are We Actually Choosing?
October feels like one of those months where life keeps asking the same question in slightly different ways:
Do you actually want this… or have you just gotten used to choosing it?
Because this month? We are revisiting some shit.
Love. Money. Relationships. Desire. Power. Communication. The things we say we value versus the things our choices suggest we value. The dynamics we know aren’t working but somehow keep finding ourselves participating in anyway.
And I don’t necessarily think October is asking us to have all the answers.
Actually, with both Venus and Mercury retrograde this month, I think it’s asking us to resist our obsession with immediately finding one.
October feels much more like a month of observation.
Notice what comes back.
Notice what bothers you again.
Notice the conversation you thought you were finished having.
Notice what you’re suddenly questioning.
Notice where your desires have changed.
And maybe most importantly:
Notice who you’ve become since the last time you were standing in this same place.
Because sometimes the situation hasn’t changed.
You have.
We start the month with some tension.
October doesn’t exactly ease us in.
On October 2, Mercury in Scorpio squares both Mars in Leo and Pluto in Aquarius, while Mars forms a trine to Neptune. The following day, Mars opposes Pluto and Venus stations retrograde in Scorpio.
Translation?
Everybody has something to say.
And everybody thinks they’re right.
Mercury in Scorpio isn’t particularly interested in surface-level conversation to begin with. This is communication that wants to investigate. To expose. To ask the uncomfortable question. To figure out what somebody really meant.
Put that Mercury in a square with Mars in Leo and Pluto in Aquarius and suddenly conversations can become battlegrounds.
There can be a desire to prove a point instead of understand one.
To get the last word.
To expose something.
To defend our pride.
To control the narrative.
To say the thing we’ve been sitting on for three months because apparently today is the day.
And listen — sometimes the thing needs to be said. But there’s a difference between speaking your truth and using “truth” as a weapon.
October starts by asking us to learn the difference.
Mars opposing Pluto adds another layer to this. Mars says I want. Pluto says but why?
Why do you need to win?
Why do you need them to agree?
Why are you still fighting for this?
Why does this particular situation have so much power over you?
Those are very different questions.
And they lead us directly into one of the biggest stories of October.
Venus Retrograde: what do you value now?
Venus stations retrograde in Scorpio on October 3 and remains retrograde until November 13. On October 25, she eventually backs out of Scorpio and returns to Libra.
Venus rules love, relationships, pleasure, beauty, money, attraction and value.
And whenever Venus retrogrades, we enter a period of reevaluation around those things.
But Venus retrograde in Scorpio isn’t exactly interested in keeping that evaluation cute.
Scorpio goes underneath.
It deals with intimacy, vulnerability, trust, attachment, power, merging, shared resources, jealousy, resentment, desire and the things we’d sometimes rather not admit we want.
So this retrograde can bring us face-to-face with some uncomfortable questions.
What does intimacy actually mean to me?
Where have I confused intensity with connection?
Where am I over giving because I’m afraid of losing someone?
Where am I withholding because vulnerability feels dangerous?
What am I tolerating because I’m emotionally invested?
What do I believe I deserve?
And where is my money going?
Because Venus isn’t just romance.
She’s resources too.
Money. Spending. Pricing. Worth. What we invest in and what we expect in return.
Which makes October an interesting month for looking at the exchange happening in our lives.
Not just financially.
Energetically.
What is this costing me?
Time?
Money?
Peace?
Energy?
Self-respect?
And is the return still worth the investment?
That question can apply to a relationship, a friendship, a job, a business, a habit, a dream or the $14 little treat you’ve somehow purchased seven times this week.
No judgment. Venus understands.
But she would like to see the receipts.
The past may come back. That doesn’t mean it belongs in your future.
Retrogrades have a reputation for bringing things back.
People.
Ideas.
Opportunities.
Feelings.
Old versions of ourselves.
And yes, sometimes an ex crawls out of whatever cave they’ve been living in and sends the classic: “hey stranger.”
But something returning isn’t automatically a cosmic endorsement.
Sometimes things come back because there is something different to understand now.
Venus retrograde gives us the opportunity to look at an old desire with new eyes.
Maybe you still want it.
Maybe you don’t.
Maybe you finally understand why you wanted it in the first place.
Maybe you realize you were chasing validation more than the actual thing.
Maybe something you thought you outgrew suddenly feels meaningful again.
October doesn’t require us to immediately decide.
It asks us to pay attention.
The Libra New Moon: a reset, but not a clean slate.
On October 10, we get a New Moon at approximately 17° Libra.
Normally, New Moons are where we’re looking forward.
Fresh starts. New intentions. New cycles.
And Libra naturally brings our attention toward relationships, reciprocity, harmony, justice, compromise and balance.
But there’s an important little plot twist here:
This New Moon is ruled by Venus… and Venus is retrograde.
So this doesn’t feel like new year, new me, burn the old life down and start over.
It feels more like:
Wait. Before we move forward, can we talk about what balance actually means now?
Libra can sometimes confuse peace with the absence of conflict.
And they’re not the same thing.
Keeping everybody happy isn’t balance.
Avoiding the uncomfortable conversation isn’t harmony.
Abandoning yourself so someone else doesn’t become uncomfortable isn’t compromise.
Sometimes creating real peace requires disrupting fake peace first.
And that feels incredibly relevant under this New Moon.
Instead of asking:
How do I keep everything balanced?
Try asking:
What would make this relationship more honest?
Where do I need greater reciprocity?
What does fairness look like when I include myself in the equation?
Because you count too.
Mid-month gives us somewhere to put the energy.
After the intensity of the beginning of October, the middle of the month gives us a little more traction.
On October 15, the Sun in Libra sextiles Jupiter in Leo. Around October 15–16, Pluto stations direct in Aquarius, and on October 16 Mars in Leo trines Saturn in Aries.
And I really like this little pocket of astrology.
Because after all the questioning, there is movement.
Sun sextile Jupiter can widen perspective.
Maybe the situation isn’t as impossible as it looked. Maybe there’s another option. Maybe you’re finally able to zoom out enough to see what this chapter has actually been teaching you.
Then Mars trine Saturn gives us something incredibly useful:
sustainable action.
Mars wants to move.
Saturn wants a plan.
Together, they remind us that transformation doesn’t always look dramatic.
Sometimes it looks like consistency.
Making the appointment.
Having the conversation.
Changing the budget.
Setting the boundary.
Showing up again tomorrow.
Doing the boring thing that future-you will be incredibly grateful you did.
We’re not trying to force an entirely new life into existence overnight.
We’re building something we can actually maintain.
And then we go deeper.
Venus retrograde squares Pluto around October 20, and by October 23 the Sun enters Scorpio. The Sun then meets retrograde Venus at the very beginning of Scorpio late on October 23/early October 24.
Whatever Venus retrograde has been showing us becomes harder to ignore.
Because Venus-Pluto conversations tend to expose attachment.
What are you afraid to lose?
What are you trying to control?
What are you holding onto because releasing it would require admitting something has changed?
There can be incredibly deep emotional material here.
But there can also be clarity.
Because when the Sun meets Venus during her retrograde cycle, we reach an important midpoint in the Venus retrograde story.
Something begins to make sense.
Not necessarily everything.
But maybe enough.
Maybe you understand what you want now.
Or what you don’t want.
And honestly?
Knowing what you don’t want is still information.
Mercury Retrograde: now let’s rethink the story.
Because apparently Venus wasn’t enough, Mercury says:
Move over.
Mercury stations retrograde in Scorpio on October 24 and remains retrograde until November 13.
So yes.
By the final week of October, both Mercury and Venus are retrograde.
Which makes this less of a GO GO GO moment and much more of a:
Hold on. Let me think about this.
Mercury retrograde gets blamed for every delayed train, broken phone and questionable text message in existence.
And sure.
Back up your shit.
Double-check your calendar.
Read the email before you hit send.
But the deeper purpose of Mercury retrograde is reflection.
Mercury governs how we think, communicate, interpret and understand information. In Scorpio, Mercury wants to revisit what’s underneath the story.
What wasn’t said?
What did I misunderstand?
What information was missing?
What assumption did I make?
What am I only now ready to talk about?
And because Venus is retrograde simultaneously, some of those conversations may involve relationships, money, boundaries, desire and values.
October isn’t necessarily giving us brand-new information.
Sometimes it’s giving us new understanding of old information.
And that’s just as valuable.
Venus goes back to Libra.
On October 25, retrograde Venus leaves Scorpio and re-enters Libra, one of the signs Venus rules.
And I think there’s something really beautiful about this part of the story.
We spent the first portion of Venus retrograde underground.
Scorpio asked:
What’s really happening here?
What are you attached to?
What are you afraid of?
Where is the power?
Where is the resentment?
Where is the desire?
And then Venus returns to Libra and asks:
Okay. Now that you know all of that… what would balance actually look like?
Now we’re revisiting agreements.
Relationship dynamics.
Compromise.
Reciprocity.
Our standards.
How we give.
How we receive.
How much of ourselves we’ve been sacrificing in the name of keeping the peace.
And whether the relationships we’re participating in actually reflect the values we claim matter to us.
The Taurus Full Moon: bring it back to what is real.
Then, on October 26, we get a Full Moon at approximately 2° Taurus.
And after spending so much of October digging around in Scorpio territory, Taurus says:
Okay babe. Come back into your body.
What is actually sustainable?
What feels safe?
What supports you?
What do you have?
What do you need?
What is enough?
Taurus brings us back to the tangible world.
Our bodies.
Our money.
Our resources.
Our homes.
Our routines.
Our nervous systems.
Our values.
Our ability to experience pleasure without constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop.
And because Taurus is ruled by Venus, this Full Moon brings the entire Venus retrograde story right back to center stage.
Something may become visible here.
A financial reality.
A relationship dynamic.
A need.
A boundary.
A desire.
A realization about what stability means to you now.
And with the Sun in Scorpio squaring Pluto around the same time, there can still be tension around control, power or resistance to change.
But Taurus doesn’t need the dramatic answer.
Taurus wants the answer you can live with.
The one that lets your shoulders drop.
The one your body believes.
So what is October actually about?
I think October is asking us to become more honest about our choices.
Not the choices we think we’re supposed to make.
Not the choices that keep everyone comfortable.
Not the choices that made sense three years ago.
The choices that make sense for the person we are becoming now.
And that may require revisiting some things.
Renegotiating some things.
Changing our minds.
Having uncomfortable conversations.
Admitting we want something different.
Or realizing we actually still want something we thought we’d outgrown.
None of that means you’re moving backward.
Reflection is part of movement.
There are seasons for initiating.
There are seasons for building.
And there are seasons where life hands you the blueprint again and says:
Look at this one more time before we keep going.
October feels like that.
So don’t rush the answer.
Pay attention to the questions.
