Virgo New Moon 2025: The Black Moon of Beginnings
On August 22, 2025, we step into a rare and powerful new moon at 0° Virgo. This lunation isn’t just any new moon — it’s the first of two Virgo new moons in a row, a phenomenon known as a Black Moon. One opens the cycle at zero degrees, and the other closes it at 29 degrees, carrying the weight of beginnings and endings all at once.
In a year of 9 — a year of change, completion, and release — this double Virgo moon cycle holds the potential to reshape everything we’ve been tending to. Think of it as the cosmos drawing a circle around your Virgo-Pisces axis, asking you to refine, reset, and realign.
The Astrology of the New Moon
This new moon lands at the very first degree of Virgo — the first decan, which is ruled by the Sun. Here, Virgo energy is sharp, illuminating, and infused with the clarity of self-awareness. It’s the spark of devotion: the first steps toward refining your path.
But here’s the twist: the new moon makes a square to Uranus in Gemini. This jolts us awake with surprises, sudden insights, or disruptions to our carefully planned routines. It’s the cosmos reminding Virgo energy that perfection is impossible and flexibility is necessary.
This lunation also opens the door to eclipse season. Next month’s lunar eclipse in Pisces will demand we release Piscean illusions, escapism, or martyrdom that block us from embodying Virgo’s precision and intention. Then, at the end of Virgo season, we’ll meet the second Black Moon — a solar eclipse at 29° Virgo, conjunct the South Node and opposite Saturn, a karmic clearing that sweeps away what no longer belongs.
This first new moon, then, is a beginning with the end already written — a reminder to set intentions now that will be tested, refined, and solidified through the eclipse portal.
Working With the Virgo–Pisces Axis
To set intentions under this Virgo new moon, look not only at your Virgo placements and house but also at your Pisces house. This axis will be lit up for the next month. What you commit to under Virgo, you’ll be asked to release or dissolve under Pisces.
Virgo asks: What am I devoted to building?
Pisces asks: What illusions, fears, or habits must I surrender to support that devotion?

A Simple Virgo New Moon Ritual
You don’t need anything elaborate to align with this moon. Virgo loves simple, intentional practices.
Cleanse your space. (Declutter, sage, or simply light a candle.)
Ground yourself. Take a few deep breaths or meditate for 5 minutes.
Write your intentions. Choose 3–5 very clear, specific intentions that align with your Virgo house. Phrase them in the present tense.
Example: I maintain consistent rituals that nourish my body and spirit.
Offer gratitude. Close your ritual by thanking the universe and visualizing your intentions taking root.
Optional: place your written intentions under a piece of clear quartz or another crystal until the Pisces eclipse to track your progress.
Closing Thoughts: Flowing With Change
Virgo doesn’t always like change — it loves precision, order, and control. But this year, with its 9 energy, change is the very medicine we’re being asked to embrace. This Black Moon reminds us that precision isn’t about control, it’s about devotion.
Set your intentions. Trust the disruptions. And remember: this is the last new moon before eclipse season — the seeds you plant now will grow into the clearing, the harvest, and the transformation to come.
